You may decide to choose different types of flooring in the different rooms of your home, or you may choose to try and have the same flooring in every room for consistency and style. If you do choose to have the same flooring in each room then you will have to make compromises though as no floor is perfect.
Carpets are ideal for some rooms and no use at all in others: carpets of course are soft, you can sit or lie on them and children can play on them safely and comfortably. A carpet can make a room feel far cozier and so they are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. A carpet in the kitchen though will get covered in food and stains and quickly be ruined and in high traffic areas something more durable may be needed. With carpets the pile can be caught leading to it being pulled, also open pile carpets easily get matted and lose their quality. One option would be to compromise by having a carpet with a tight closed pile that is less likely to let dirt seep in and less likely to get pulled but is also not as soft.
You may then choose to go for tiles throughout your home, they are great in the kitchen and in bathrooms where they can easily be cleaned, though they may easily be damaged if heavy items are dropped on them. Tiles are good in high traffic areas though as they are hard wearing as long as they are properly laid. In a living room or bedroom however, except in the hottest of climates cold tiles don't seem right and can make a room feel too cold and unpleasant.
Stone floors have similar issues to tiles in terms of their being cold but they may look better, especially in a traditional home where slate or a sandstone may fit it and the colors can warm a room. You may choose to add rugs to some rooms with stone floors to make them a little more warm. Stone floors also have the advantage over tiles that if they chip they still look fine usually, and with tough stones like granite and marble, stone floors are much less likely to be damaged in the first place.
If you are determined to have the same type of floor around your entire home then a hardwood floor is maybe your best option. With hardwood you get a great choice of colors and styles. Light woods like maple and beech may fit in more in more minimalist or modern homes, whereas darker woods like a dark oak may be better in traditional homes.
Just how durable hardwood floors are depends on the type of wood but they shouldn't become damaged too easily if they have been treated properly. Hardwood floors though will eventually get some damage, including scratches and stains, and can then be sanded down to show up a new layer that will look fresh and new.
Hardwood floors are also a good compromise on temperature as they don't hold the cold like tiles or stone but also aren't very warm and cozy like carpet. You could always again add rugs to some rooms on top of wooden floors if needed.
